Downshire moved comfortably into the third round of the competition managing to overcome an early set back along the way. The Hillsborough side experimented with a new look formation and were rocked after only five minutes with the home sides first attack as Downshire failed to mark up from a throw in when the ball was launched to the back post, the young ‘Abbey winger ‘was totally unmarked to blast the ball past Lewis.
However Downshire remained calm and continued to play a lot of positive and controlled football but it appeared that it might not be their day with a succession of goal bound efforts failing to find the target. Eventually they got the breakthrough after Ryan Cree who had performed tirelessly was pushed inside the penalty area for the referee to award a spot kick. Darren McCall stepped up to put his side on level terms.
Downshire continued to dominate but it was not until early in the second half that they gained the initiative. A clever through ball from Gareth Scott put Danny Anderson away and the striker calmly waltzed round the keeper before tapping home from an acute angle. They might have increased their lead shortly after when Ryan Cree fired in a rocket from twenty yards only for the keeper to push the effort round the post. Newtownabbey were not deterred and when they were awarded a corner a back flick deceived Downshire defence to again put the sides’ level.
Downshire bounced back immediately and stamped their authority with two quick strikes from Mattie English the first when Scott set him up he blasted home from close range and the second when a Metcalf corner was cleverly flicked on by Gibson the midfielder headed home. Downshire’s pace and fitness was telling now and when Graeme Davis was pushed forward he might have had a hat trick but ended with only two as he initially ran on to a perfect pass from Niall Jamison to slot home and then when Tabb laid the ball into his path he cleverly chipped the keeper for a neat finish.
